These whimsical and colorful cats were made using inspiration from Laurel Burch's art. Burch was an artist who's paintings brought happiness through her patterns, bright colors, and happy subject matter. Often times she painted cats. After looking at her cat paintings and sculptures we studied the way she drew her cats. Our "sculptures" were created using paper, stuffed with newspaper.

Kinderarten: St. Patrick's Day Scratch Art
Kindergarten learned how to make their very own rainbow scratch boards. On a piece of mat board, kindergarten used oil pastel to first color their rainbow background. Then using a combination of dish soap and black acrylic paint, they painted over their rainbows. After allowing the paint to dry, Kindergarten came back next class to scratch away their St. Patrick's Day designs. Students made pictures of things such as leprechauns, pots of gold, rainbows, etc. Unfortunately I did not get any finished product photos before pulling of the tape and sending them home.
2nd Grade: Spring Bunnies
Although we're a little early for Spring, Easter is just around the corner. Second grade created bunnies with beautiful wildflower backgrounds. Second grade used thin Sharpies to created the lines used in the bunnies. This added the look of texture as well as a stylized look. For the background, students combined the use of crayons and water color paints.
