6th Grade: Literal Word Art

lit·er·al
ˈlidərəl,ˈlitrəl/
adjective
  1. 1.
taking words in their usual or most basic sense without metaphor or allegory.

  2. 2.
(of a translation) representing the exact words of the original text.

  3. The students and I discussed the word "literal" and then looked at some ways of creating art out of a word. This project was extremely challenging at first, but after some thought, every student was on board. The results were quite fun to see. To add on another challenge to this project, the students were only able to use paper to create the entire final piece.

Kindergarten: Wayne Thiebaud Gumball Machines

Kindergarten had a lot of practice drawing circles to create their gumball machines! These fun gumball machines were inspired by this painting by the artist Wayne Thiebaud.

The kindergarten students used tinfoil to add some extra shine to their machines.

2nd Grade: Veterans Day Flags

Thank you to our Veterans! The second graders learned about what a Veteran is and how we honor them on November 11th, Veterans Day. To show our appreciation to Veterans, the second graders made American Flags. We first looked at a painting of the American flag made by the artist Jasper John. Second grade painted their American flag on top of newspaper, just like Jasper John.
"Flag" by Jasper John

The flags were then displayed in the entry of the school for any visiting Veterans to see. When the students finished making their flags they also had time to write thank you letters. The letters were then mailed to local veterans.

8th Grade: Graffiti Art

This was the first project for the eighth grade, and was a great way for the students to tell me a little about them, as well as learn names. The eighth graders worked really hard on this project which is why it ended up taking them a little longer than planned. Here are some of the in progress photos and the awesome outcomes.

1st Grade: Rocket Ships

THREE, TWO, ONE, BLAST OFF!

First graders created these mixed media rocket ships using colored construction paper, white splatter paint, construction paper crayons, neon watercolor, and everyone's favorite...GLITTER! The students learned about line designs for the jet fuel coming from their rockets, and the different planets for their backgrounds.

4th Grade: Leaf Patterns

Fourth grade learned about pattern and repetition in art. We looked at a few famous art work and talked about why we think they repeated an image again and again. we also looked at some fabric patterns to help inspire our leaf patterns. I think the students did an awesome job on this project. I really love how beautiful they turned out!

Students started by creating their own personalized leaf tracer. They then used their tracer to create their pattern by repeating the shape again and again and flipping it in different directions. Then they used a black crayon to color a solid black background.

Once they finished with the crayon, the students were free to use watercolors, painting the leaves fall colors.

 Check out the radial pattern!
