3rd Grade: Picasso Monsters

Pablo Picasso's portraits changed a lot over his lifetime as an artist. They became more abstract. You can see in some of them it appears as if you were looking at a face from different angles all in one picture.

Students used this style in their own work to create wither a witch, Frankenstein, or vampire.

2nd Grade: Warm and Cool Corn

I try to start the year by learning more and more about color. Second graders learned about warm and cool colors. We discussed why they are considered warm or cool. We used Indian corn to create these fall themed pictures. The corn was painted using only warm colors while the background was painted using cool colors.

1st Grade: Rainbows

Rainbows were a really fun way to review or color wheel in first grade. Like brought so much bright beautiful color on the cloudy grey day we were painting them. Of course you cant have rainbows without the rain so we added shinny raindrops using tin foil.

Kindergarten: Flower Color Wheels

Learning the color wheel is one of the foundations of art! Understanding color and how they mix together is something students will use throughout their art career. Mixing colors is such a fun when to experiment with paints. I loved how these flowers turned out this year along with some adorable backgrounds.

1st Grade: Fall Landscapes

This fun and easy project is a great way for students to learn a very basic form of printing. Folding the paper in half, the students press down to transfer their tree to the reflection side.
The way the color smooshes together creates some really beautiful trees.

Kindergarten: The Dot

I love starting out the kindergarten school year with the book, "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds.
This book is a wonderful way to encourage students that we all can be artists and it only takes one mark to get started. It also shows students that there are so many forms of art.
After reading the book, each student creates a dot by either filling in a circle with water color paint, or filling in around the circle. This was a technique that the main character used in "The Dot".
Look how wonderfully different all the dots turn out.

Pre K: Fall Trees

Last class, the preK students were like scientists doing experiments. We experimented with what happens when we mix different colors together. We learned how to make orange, green and purple. This week, students used that knowledge while making their fall trees.
After discussing how to draw a tree, students used red and yellow paint to add leaves. Students painted with a crumpled up piece of tin foil to add texture to their trees. As they added the red and yellow, the colors mixed together to create orange leaves as well.
I love the way the colors blended together and the texture the tin foil creates.
